What do you mean Justin Bieber had a past girlfriend yell at him before he performed onstage?

That's exactly what we're wondering, as the "What Do You Mean?" crooner spilled that fun fact while appearing on Friday's On Air With Ryan Seacrest. Justin was discussing how nervous he is for this weekend's VMAs, where he's set to perform his new single and confessed that a certain someone who he kept nameless used to yell at him before he went out to sing.

"I've had an ex-girlfriend scream at me before going on stage and stuff," Justin admitted.

Fortunately, he now surrounds himself with people who are there to uplift him rather than put him down. "It helps me when I have a lot of people that love me who encourage me…That really means the world, and I don't know if I would be able to do it without them," he admitted.

The Biebs also opened up about the inspiration for his forthcoming album, which will be his first major release since 2013. "I mean, most of the songs are just uplifting and fun. I wanted to use my platform in this point of my life to just reach as many people as I can in a positive way," he explained.

If "What Do You Mean?" is any indication of what fans can expect from his album, it looks like Justin has somewhat dropped the R&B sound and has returned to his pop roots with lyrics based in real-life events, of course.

"In the studio, we have talks about my direction or what I'm going through that week," he told Seacrest. "Real-life stuff. We're not just writing about fictional stuff."

The "Where Are Ü Now" singer has been opening up recently about his past mistakes, telling Elvis Duran that he has learned from them and is looking to set a better example in the future. He also explained to Seacrest that his new album will allow listeners to "understand the real me."

"I can talk about it in interviews and stuff, but what better way than to do it through my music?" he asked.
