AKM-GSIDenise Richards is, once again, lending a hand when it comes to Charlie Sheen's 3-year-old twins.
A source confirms to E! News that the Wild Things star has been granted temporary custody of her ex-husband's two boys, Bob and Max, following the removal of the kids from their mother Brooke Mueller's home by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services on Thursday.
A source also tells E! News that social workers have been investigating the situation at the residence for over a year, noting that Mueller is often gone for long stretches of time.
"She hasn't lived in her house for a few weeks," the insider said. "They don't know where she's at. It's been so bad."
The source added, "The boys have spent so much time with Denise that it was the logical choice that she would get temporary custody. Charlie is completely supportive of it and wants what's best for the boys. Charlie will probably have a better relationship with the boys now. Everyone is glad they'll have some stability."
Including, it seems, the twins themselves.
"The boys are so happy right now," the source revealed. "It got to a point where they didn't want to go home to Brooke anymore."
The last time Richards stepped in and helped out was in December. The 42-year-old actress briefly cared for Bob and Max while Mueller was in rehab for addiction issues related to her use of Adderall.
A source tells E! News that "Brooke is not upset...She trusts Denise" while a source from Sheen's camp also confirms that the twins are currently living with Richards.
Meanwhile, according to Pitkin County Deputy District Attorney Andrea Bryan, Mueller is still on probation stemming from her Aspen drug bust in December 2011.
In January, a judge cleared her probation from supervised to unsupervised. Bryan tells E! News that under the current unsupervised probation, "Absent a new criminal offense, there wouldn't be any grounds to violate her probation."
Mueller's unsupervised probation (and the entire probation in the case) will be terminated on May 21.
UPDATE: A source tells E! News that Mueller's mother, Moira, finds the airing of Brooke's problems in public "humiliating" and she's "furious" that Richards has been granted temporary custody of her grandsons. "But the main issue [children's services] has with [Moira] is that they feel they have never been upfront and truthful with them about Brooke."
