The human spirit endures—with the help of some giant robots.

In Pacific Rim, Guillermo Del Toro's latest opus, the people of earth are under attack from some interdimensional monsters who think they can just stroll into our living space and make it their own.

The monsters thought wrong. As Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman are going to make abundantly clear. In order to battle these giant menaces, people develop giant robots called Jaegers and load them with a couple of human Jaegermeisters to pilot the hulking metal machines. 1. These monsters, called Kaiju, have no respect for private property. Or public property. Basically, all property is toast when these guys show up.

3. Nothing—not monsters, not robots—is more stirring than people rallying together against a common foe.

4. Beware falling robots.

5. While it's too early to say whether this movie will totally deliver, it looks to pack a solid punch.

The film is set to hit theaters—hard—on July 12, 2013.
