He did the bizarro, fear-inducing crime. Now he's gonna do the time—five whole years of it.

The Florida man convicted of stalking the nation's preeminent twinkle-toed Olympic gymnast, Shawn Johnson, was sentenced to a maximum half decade in a mental hospital—not state prison—today.

And…cue the relieved round of celebratory backflips.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael E. Pastor gave Robert Michael O'Ryan, who pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity earlier this year, credit for 954 days already served, as he has been in police custody since his arrest on March 23, 2009.

He will serve out the remainder of his sentence at Patton State Hospital.

The 36-year-old was convicted of felony stalking and commercial burglary and two misdemeanor counts of carrying a loaded firearm in his vehicle (along with other legal but über creepy pieces of paraphernalia) last month, but his sentencing was put off until today.

The delay allowed the judge time to take into account the results of O'Ryan's psychological evaluation, as carried out by the Department of Mental Health. It's not hard to guess what those results were.
