With Batman & Robin, Joel Schumacher managed to reduce a successful 90's franchise to a blacklit, groan-inducing orgy of terrible puns and rubberized nipples. Jon and Al Kaplan decided to embrace all that garish camp and make it into the musical it was obviously trying to be all along.
Unfortunately, Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark sort of spoiled the whole ‘superhero Broadway musical' thing before it could get off the ground. Not a big deal, since this feels more like an Ice Capades production anyhow. Someone tell the Schwarz to grab his skates and brush up on his pliés and triple axles; there's work to be done and he probably has the time.
