Take Oprah's Book Club (the novel White Oleander was on her list), multiply by two Lifetime TV movies, add an Oxygen Network special, and you'll have the recipe for the silver-screen spin on White Oleander. Yes, this story of a tested mother-daughter relationship suffers from some trite storytelling, but the glowing performances keep it relatively clean.
As the foster home-jumping daughter, Alison Lohman (from TV's canceled Pasadena) shines with star power and holds her own alongside more seasoned pros like Michelle Pfeiffer (as her jailed mother) and Robin Wright Penn and Renée Zellweger (as two very different foster parents). Bring tissues and feel free to cry your eyes out.
