Once more, French director Jean-Luc Godard explains the world to us, and once more, it's kind of hard to understand what he's saying. Among his various messages are some often incomprehensible images, a few cryptic syllogisms and a fair amount of anti-Americanism. Unmistakably, Godard is trying to get a handle on how we love in a world weighed down with baggage--both historic and personal.
Yet there's a sad air to this picture--epitomized by the film-within-a-film that Bruno Putzulu is working on--that saps Godard's message of its force. What should have been stargazing too often ends up as navel gazing.
