We're all for cute. In concept, in casting, in execution. But, like all things, cute can be overdone, thrown in your face, run into the ground, etc. That's part of the problem with Me & You, a British comedy with two leads so adorable they make it hard to buy the premise, which is tough to swallow in the first place. Piper Perabo is marrying her best friend (Match Point's Matthew Goode), but when lesbian florist Lena Headey arrives at the wedding, sparks fly between her and the bride, and we're not talking about their mutual love of azaleas.
Now, there's nothing wrong with love at first sight, but for Perabo--who had shown no signs of being gay--to suddenly get weak in the knees for a woman she doesn't know on the day of her nuptials is pushing reality just a bit, no? This subject got a better treatment in another indie flick about venturing into lesbianism instead of traditional marriage, Kissing Jessica Stein. Here, both the adorable Perabo and Headey do their best--smiling and making goo-goo eyes--but somehow their attraction never feels legitimate. Even if we use our imaginations.
