There's the crazy cat lady, and then there's the dog-obsessed dude. Paul Walker is the canine-loving guy at the heart of this drama, an Antarctic guide who is fiercely loyal to his team of sled dogs. When an expedition goes terribly awry, Walker and his crew have to leave the dogs behind--for an entire sub-zero winter. Sounds exciting, no? Well...no.
Sure, the dogs have some fascinating moments of instinct-inspired derring-do, but their vignettes are intercut with ho-hum scenes of Walker moping about the pooches and his vain attempts to rescue them. The result is a paint-by-numbers family adventure, nothing less, nothing more. Thankfully, the sentimentality is played with a light hand, and the stunning scenery is exploited at every turn. Still, this standardized story isn't worth the trek.
