Further implicating Southern California as the land of surf, sun and fun is this no-holds-board documentary about a rundown '70s beach community (Dogtown) and its rag-tag group of skateboarding revolutionaries (the Z-Boys). The Zephyr Skateboarding Team, an ethnically diverse gang of kids whose clubhouse was a surf shop, X-tremely changed skating by applying surfing fluidity, getting vertical and laying the groundwork for the sport as we know it today.
Director and original Z-Boy Stacey Peralta and screenwriter, editor, team mentor and photographer Craig Stecyk weave together present-day interviews, Sean Penn narration, old photos, video footage and loud music in the traditional skate-video, rough-cut way. So, whether you're a grind god or an ollie newbie, you'll want to watch this doc like a Tony Hawk.
