Here's an example of real life translating into bad drama. Children details the tumultuous two-year romance of Parisian writer George Sand (Juliette Binoche) and poet-playwright Alfred de Musset (Benoît Magimel). During a disastrous Venice vacation, de Musset reveals an abusive streak and a penchant for drugs and brothels. When he ODs on opium, a handsome medic makes a house call, and Madame Sand falls for the good doc.
This prompts the tempestuous twosome to fight, make up, fight again, make up again...and so on. The production values are lovely, and the costumes are stunning. But this talky, on-again, awful-again love affair gets tedious fast. Basically, these Children are all dressed up with nowhere to go.
