Veteran Hong Kong director Johnny To (Fulltime Killer) has turned out yet another slick, expertly shot action thriller here, one that floats a few intriguing notions about the symbiotic relationship between police, criminals and the media. Trouble is, those notions seem like mere afterthoughts intended to spice up a standard-issue crime plot that was itself strung together as an excuse for some dynamite gunfight, manhunt and hostage set pieces.
And since the best sequence comes right at the top--an incredibly choreographed seven-minute tracking shot featuring a gun battle as impressive as it is confusing--you could just as well tune out the rest of the News.
