We're not going soft or anything, but we could've used a little more character development in the action-packed kick-fest Ecks vs. Sever. (A better title would be nice too.) The flick's convoluted plot has ex-FBI agent Ecks (Antonio Banderas) seeking both a kidnapped child and information about his assumed-dead wife, all while chasing after one-woman wrecking crew Sever (Lucy Liu, who doesn't even speak for, like, the first 30 minutes).
But with so many the flashy fights, impressive explosions and crazy stunts, Ballistic offers neither the time nor the opportunity to care about the plight of the characters. As a result, neither the emotional reunions, nor the end-of-movie showdowns, have any real resonance. For a movie with so much fire, this one totally lacks heat.
