It's An Officer and a Gentleman for audiences too young to remember the movie that made Richard Gere a leading man. This time, it's the softened, dulled, PG-13 version starring Spider-Man's James Franco as the guy from the wrong side of the tracks whose dream is to become a Naval officer. Naturally, everyone from his father to his commanding officers thinks he's a loser and that he'll quit.
But it's just that type of challenge that makes our hero dig deep inside himself and become the soldier he knew he could be. Now, if this plot description makes you excited to see the movie, then bless you--you're exactly the sort of undemanding audience member Hollywood counts on to make its dough. So, step right up and enjoy this dull, stiff, pointless retread. But if you think you've heard it all before--you have, you really have--then save your movie ticket allowance for something else.
