Cameron Diaz as a pot-smoking, German-speaking, '70s-era revolutionary wannabe? Holy hippie chick! Very early into The Invisible Circus we learn that Faith (Diaz) killed herself in Portugal. Now, six years later, younger sister Phoebe (Jordana Brewster) travels to Europe, meets up with her big sis' ex-boyfriend Wolf and attempts to sniff out answers about Faith's death.
In addition to attractive locations and art direction, the film features solid performances by Christopher Eccleston (Wolf) and the wonderful Blythe Danner (Faith and Phoebe's ma). Based on the novel of the same name, the sometimes not-so-subtle screenplay makes a few missteps, including Phoebe's sexual escapades with her dead sister's former lover, which--three-ring circus, indeed--is more creepy than poignant. Still, this cinematic big top is worth the price of admission.
