Careful, this might hurt a little. Borrowing heavily from film noir, writer-director David Atkins cranks up the gas on dentist Steve Martin, whose well-ordered life includes a prosperous practice and impending nuptials to Laura Dern. But then drug-loving hottie Helena Bonham Carter (looking straight outta Fight Club), takes the good doctor for a, um, ride, seducing him in the dentist's chair and then splitting with his pain killers.
Quicker than you can say "rinse and spit," Martin falls victim to a con scheme that drags him through a seedy underworld of drugs and violence. As Martin gets to the root of the problem, the story gets more convoluted than interesting. Some of the cast--especially bully Scott Caan--coulda been yanked, and a higher dosage of humor would have been nice. Still, a hilarious Kevin Bacon cameo almost makes up for this disappointing trip to the doc.
