Despite becoming award winners, celebrities haven't always been perfect when it comes to trying out for a role. Sometimes it's as easy as not being right for the role, and other times they get passed up because of a disastrous audition. Tough to imagine an Oscar winner bombing a try out, right? But it has happened. Thanks to stars' candid confessions about some of their worst auditions, fans can know that not even the best of stars have had perfect luck.
Here is E! News official ranking of auditions that went terribly wrong, in order of least embarrassing to most embarrassing:
8. Jared Leto: The Oscar winner once tried (and failed) out for Star Trek. "One of my first auditions was for one line in Star Trek, just one line in Star Trek: The New Generation," the 44-year-old actor told E! News. "Great show, but I was terrible and I definitely did not get the part. I remember going up for WKRP in Cincinnati...They tried to remake the show. Definitely didn't get the part. I remember being so bad, just being so embarrassed reading. How can you be so bad?"
7. Ryan Reynolds: While talking to Variety, Reynolds revealed his lack of vocal skills lost him a part. "I was never a great auditioner. But I had one where I had to sing, and I'm a nervous singer. I'm one of those people that...you know when you're in the shower, and you're like, 'This is pretty good'? But once I get out into the real world, it's just like my voice turns into a hammer that hits everybody in the face. So I did an audition where I had to sing, and it was pretty bad. It's one of those auditions that was so bad that I look back and I think, 'What if that tape surfaces at some point? That'll be the death of me.' Yeah. That was pretty awful."
6. Jake Gyllenhaal: The Nightcrawler star didn't realize he would have to adopt an accent for a high-profile role. "I remember auditioning for The Lord of the Rings and going in and not being told that I needed a British accent," he recalled to The Hollywood Reporter. "I really do remember Peter Jackson saying to me, 'You know that you have to do this in a British accent?' We heard back it was literally one of the worst auditions."
5. Eddie Redmayne: The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star once tried to play villain Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and bombed. "So, I was going for, I think, for Adam Driver. They gave me like a Star Trek scene, or like something from Pride and Prejudice. It was one of those films," he recalled to Uproxx. "With films that top secret, they don't give you the actual lines, so they give you a scene from Pride and Prejudice, but then they tell you you're auditioning for the baddie. If you're me, you then put some ridiculous voice on."
Unfortunately, that "ridiculous voice" didn't work out for Redmayne. "That was really a hilarious moment. Because it was Nina Gold, who I have to thank a lot because she's cast me in several films," he continued. "And she was just sitting there and I was trying again and again with different versions of my kind of 'koohh paaaah' [Darth Vader breathing sound] voice. And after like 10 shots she's like, 'You got anything else?' I was like, 'No.'"
4. Chris Evans: Even Captain America gets a little starstruck from time to time (despite his saying otherwise). "I don't get starstruck. I'm fine. Especially Ben [Affleck]—he's a Boston guy; I should be fine," Chris recalled to Backstage. "I went in [for Gone Baby Gone] and shook his hand, and the first thing I said was'‘Hey, how ya doing? Am I gonna be okay where I parked?' And he said, 'Where'd you park?' And I said, 'At one of the meters.' And he said, 'Did you put money in it?' And I said, 'Yeah.' And he said, 'I think you'll be all right.' "From that moment, I just wanted to get the f--k out of the room."
He continued, "I was so mortified that I started this meeting off that way. I started giving him one-word answers...'So, what was your last movie like?' 'Good.' 'What was it like to work with Danny Boyle?' 'Good.' I just wanted to get out of there. It was horrible, a complete disaster. So, obviously, I did not get that job."
3. Drew Barrymore: The He's Just Not That Into You actress not only was mortified during one of her auditions but was also insulted. "Oh my God, I won't say the movie, but they called me in on a Sunday with a casting assistant. They didn't think I was worthy enough of even reading with the casting director. They did it in the basement, and it was a scene where I have to do this oral thing with this guy's hand, and no one was there so I had to do it to myself. It was by far the most humiliating experience. I thought,'‘They think I'm such s--t that I'm here on a Sunday with the assistant, giving myself a finger in the mouth. This is a low point.'"
2. Bryan Cranston: You can't blame a guy for going the method acting route.
"I was auditioning for a movie at Paramount. I was 21...it said [the character] was a cocky, self-centered, egotistical brat. I remember wearing cowboy boots and jeans, an open loose shirt. The story took place in Texas or something, so I thought, 'I'm going to go in there and be just this guy.' I walked in like this and he stands up, holds out his hand and I go, psh. I sat down, kicked my boots up onto his desk and just kind of looked at him. He sat down, looked at my boots and said, 'Get your boots off of my desk.' And I went, 'Oh s--t.' Then I went psh. I just scoffed at him again...he goes, 'GET YOUR BOOTS OFF MY DESK.'"
Cranston continued, "And I just thought, it's over, and I just took the boots, sat up a little bit. 'I tried something. Didn't work. I'm sorry,' and said, ‘Wouldn't really matter if I read now, would it?' And he goes, 'No.' I got up and walked out."
1. Felicity Huffman: "I was going in for the ingenue, and I put on my dress, and I realized that I just wasn't quite chesty enough. So I took toilet paper, and I stuffed my bra," Huffman said, per Hollywood.com. "Then I went in and did a terrible audition, for a movie, with the director and the fancy people in the room, and it just laid there like a dead fish and I was like, ‘Well, thank you so much.' "And I leaned down to get my bag and somehow, the arm of toilet paper—it was God's joke— came and went out of my dress like that. So I had to pick up my ego and my toilet paper and walk out of the room."
It just goes to show that no matter how talented stars may be, they all have their low points.
