Watch: Will "Vampire Diaries" Get a Happy Ending?

Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) is currently in a deep slumber somewhere in the world of The Vampire Diaries, and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) is waiting out the return of his one true love by being possessed by an unspeakable evil and killing innocents. But by the end of the show's eighth and final season, will the cursed couple be able to have their happy ending?

The spell Elena is under is named after a fairytale, for goodness sake.

"Honestly, I don't know that," Somerhalder tells E! News on TVD's Atlanta set. "It's Mystic Falls. There are no happy endings. It didn't start that way and I don't know if it's going to end that way. I do know that's a very much anticipated storyline but I honestly just don't know!"

But to be honest, he's not sure that Damon and his vampire brother, Stefan (Paul Wesley) even deserve it. "These two guys came into this town, they wreaked havoc. This poor, 18-year old girl—talk about robbing the cradle, I'm like 165! These two guys came into her life, and they destroyed it," he confesses. "Everything she's ever known is gone. Almost everyone she's ever known is dead. She burned her house down. She's now in a box."

Check out the video above for Somerhalder's true series-ending wish, which involves some peace in Mystic Falls (for once). "Let Mystic Falls go back to being a place where humans thrive," he says. "I want the humans to win because humans need to win. We need hope for humanity right now!"

Watch: Candice King Teases Final Season of "Vampire Diaries"

Meanwhile, Candice King is just happy that the show gets to go out in style. "It's going to be a satisfying but emotional goodbye at the end of it," she tells us. "Right now I'm just excited to focus on being here and really enjoying this last season. It's such a gift to be able to go into our season eight knowing it's the last year."

She continues, "I don't think you get to do that often in television, where you get to see the beginning, the middle and celebrate the end."

The Vampire Diaries' eighth and final season premieres Friday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
