Hollywood just keeps on surprising us when it comes to relationship statuses.

Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts caught pop culture fans off guard Monday afternoon when they announced their split after 11 years together.

"Over the past few months we've come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple," the couple said in a statement to E! News. "It is with great love, respect, and friendship in our hearts that we look forward to raising our children together and exploring this new phase of our relationship."

The pair added, "While we appreciate your curiosity and support, we ask the press to be mindful of our children and respect their right to privacy."

While the news may come from a united front, fans were still left asking one big question: What went wrong?

A source told E! News that there wasn't one specific thing that led to the timing of the split. Instead, "it's been a long time coming." Our insider added that they will continue to live in both Los Angeles and New York while they raise their two children.

"They'll still be good friends and co-parents," our source shared.

That mindset has been on display in recent weeks as the pair has stepped out without raising any eyebrows. Earlier this month, the couple was spotted holding hands while attending The Bleeder premiere during the Toronto International Film Festival.

While Liev attended the 2016 Emmys with his oldest son, Naomi documented the duo getting red carpet ready from home on Instagram.

And just this past weekend, social media posts pointed to both Naomi and Liev attending the same birthday party in New York.

"I think people know how gutsy Naomi is, but I don't think people realize how funny she is," Liev once shared to InStyle when praising his leading lady. "I see that side of her every day so I'm glad that everybody else gets to see it."
