It's hard to think of a world without Sonia Rykiel.

The Parisian designer began her career in 1961 while she was pregnant—and her pregnant state was actually one of the main influences that shaped her practical-yet-chic design philosophy. She was among the first to start designing fashionable maternity wear, but that wasn't all. The fashion icon was also known for creating mature, gender-bending designs. Think: knitwear, trousers, jackets, jumpsuits and other pieces that were meant (and made) for modern women of all ages.

Globally, she's known for the construction of comfortable, high-fashion clothing where style was never sacrificed. And it's that very approach that still has fans and consumers alike attracted even still today.
