Zoe Saldana had a lot more to celebrate last night than just the Comic-Con premiere of Star Trek Beyond.
Just hours before walking the red carpet in San Diego, the actress' Italian husband of three years, Marco Saldana (he took her last name shortly after getting married), became a U.S. citizen.
"We're still riding this high," the Avatar star told me. "It's very special to us. I'm a daughter of immigrants and my family remembers very very well when they became citizens and what it means for them and knowing what they left behind and knowing all the amazing opportunities they were giving their children and there we were supporting my husband, who is a new immigrant, becoming a citizen with his sons right there by his side. It just felt so beautiful."
Zoe documented the milestone with photos on her Instagram. "It just felt, especially this year, we wanted to share this because we know that there are many many people that aren't as fortunate to be able to become citizens," Zoe said. "But I want to encourage them and implore them to never give up."
Zoe and Marco, an artist, were married in June 2013. Their twins Bowie and Cy will be two in November.
Saldana called the current wave of anti-immigration rhetoric in the U.S. "gibberish."
