Prince Gets Magazine and Newspaper Tribute Covers After Death: 5 of the Best

The legendary pop and rock star died on April 21 at age 57

It comes as no surprise that Prince made front page headlines around the world when he died unexpectedly last week.

Memorabilia collectors may be particularly interested to know the 57-year-old legendary pop and rock star was immortalized in print, on several newspaper and magazine covers.

1. Entertainment Weekly

The magazine honored Prince with a May 6, 2016 tribute issue whose cover features a purple font and a black and white close-up portrait of the singer wearing jacket and a polka dot tie.

Prince was known as the "Purple One" and his 1984 single "Purple Rain" was arguably his most famous. He was also known for an album and rock musical film of the same name.

In the issue, his friends and colleagues share stories about Prince.

2. The New Yorker

Prince graces the cover of the outlet's May 2 issue, which features a simple and beautiful purple rain image.

Prince graced the cover of the world's most respected newspaper's front page on April 22, the day after he died. The outlet featured a photo of him performing at The Forum in Inglewood in the Los Angeles area, wearing a shiny purple jacket and white lace shirt.

"A mesmerizing master of pop," The New York Times dubs the singer. 

4. The New York Daily News

On the cover of its April 22 issue, the outlet featured a publicity photo of Prince shot for the 1986 movie Under the Cherry Moon, which starred the singer and marked his directorial debut.

"R.I.P. You Sexy Mother," read the cover, referencing the performer's 1992 hit "Sexy MF."

5. The Minneapolis Star Tribune

Prince's hometown newspaper honored him with a special issue on April 22. The front page features the title "Purple Majesty" and a photo of the singer from a 1985 concert at The Forum, as well as a shot of thousands of fans dancing at a Mumford & Sons concert in St. Paul on the day Prince died, while the band performed a tribute to him.

The issue features a front-page op-ed about how the singer, a "creative giant," couldn't be contained, teases to stories focusing on the singer's life and reactions from fans, local and international, famous and not-famous and a first-hand account of the Star Tribune's longtime music critic's professional relationship with him.

"I knew him for six years before he looked me in the eye," wrote Jon Bream. "Yes, Prince was very shy. Until he got onstage. Or until you got to know him."
