Capes to the rescue!

The winter to spring transition is probably the most drastic and confusing of seasonal changes. You've been under three or more layers of clothing for the past five months, then all of a sudden it's time to unwrap your scarf and let your body defrost. It won't be hot enough for shorts, but your jeans make you sweat. It's not T-shirt weather quite yet, but your wool turtleneck sweater will be too warm. There's one fine solution for your awkward, transitional wardrobe woes and stars like Gigi Hadid and Carrie Underwood have uncovered it.

This high fashion beauty took an elevated turn when she stepped out in a calf-length pleated cape. With most pieces of apparel, length is universal in that it can take any playful look to a more sophisticated place. When it comes to wearing yours, make sure your shoe game is strong. That's pretty much the only other element of the outfit anyone will see, so pick something bold (à la Gigi's strappy decision).

You can always count on Carrie to bring the class. A collared cape makes one posh statement and paired with ladylike heels, it's the perfect outfit for stepping away from the office on your lunch hour in. There's a certain sophistication that comes off when you rock a mid-length cape. It says you're extremely fashionable while, at the same time, giving off a conservative feel. Note: When you wear something of this length, whatever you choose to wear underneath should stick out the bottom, if only just a touch. You don't want to give off the impression you're not wearing anything.

This cropped baby blue cape makes all kinds of statements. When the clasp is a single button and it hangs open, like Rita Ora's, it's clear purpose is to tie everything together. Without it, your outfit wouldn't feel as complete. Think of it as the icing on top of your well-dressed cake! Really any outfit underneath will do, but throwing a playful cape over top of will immediately elevate it.

If you haven't noticed, capes come off as being quite regal, so it's not often you see someone throw so much edge into the mix. Dianna Agron is a game-changer. Right off the bat, anything leather is going to look extra cool. Add fringe and you've got yourself one epic statement piece. Keep everything you wear with it simple, so all eyes are on the cape. You don't want to create any confusion.

Taking it back to the old school is Alexa Chung. Your go-to white tee, jeans and boot combination is about to get a serious upgrade. Look for a chain detailing or button details when shopping for your cape. The extra details make all the difference, especially when you're pairing it with an everyday outfit. Throw one over your shoulders on your way out the door!
