YouTubeIs nothing sacred anymore!? Sure Furby was a tad disturbing when it came out, but the toy still managed to win the hearts of '90s children everywhere. Kiddos weren't the only ones falling in love with the wide-eyed fuzzheads. It turns out hackers (like the people who break into computers and stuff) make up a lot of Furby's following as well. This isn't anything new says Gizmodo, in fact, the Furby hacking community is still going strong. Kinda cool but kinda weird, don't you think?
To be honest, we had no idea these lil' buddies were still being made, but according to the toys website, Hasbro is still cranking them out. Over the years, Gizmodo notes, oodles of how-to videos have surfaced on YouTube to help hackers tinker with their toys. According to the article, hackers have taken modern-day Furbies and made it so they can "perform specific functions" if you get a Twitter mention or an email. Not. Fair. Why couldn't our Furby alert us when we got a new Instant Message on AIM!? Deep breaths.
What's the most recent development in the Furby hacking world? Gizmodo says it's something called the "Open Furby project," which would allow everyone (seemingly not just hacking wizards) to craft/hack the Furby of their dreams. If there is enough interest the article says, a Kickstarter campaign might happen in order to bring more people on board the Furby hacking bandwagon. Sign us up. We want a Furby who does our taxes, calls us pretty and spits freshly grilled White Castle sliders out of its beak.
