Red carpet rule no. 3: You wear a smoky eye—it doesn't wear you!

The dramatic eye is a common look at award shows, but oftentimes, it can overwhelm the face rather than play a complementary counterpart. Well, not in Zendaya's case. The actress took to the 2016 Golden Globes red carpet in a brick-hued iteration paired with a dark-nude lip and wine-colored, tiered Marchesa dress.

It was the perfect smoky eye, which is why we created our own version. In case you missed our GlamSnap—SnapChat beauty tutorials inspired by red carpet looks—here's how to get the look yourself, courtesy of celeb makeup artist Karen Gonzalez.

"I love that her eyes were dark but not overpowering. There was nothing in the waterline—it was that sultry," said the Instagram star. "You can play it up with light or dark lips—there's just so much you can do with it."

Here's how to get Zendaya's smoky eyes…at home!

Step 2: With the Urban Decay Naked3 Eye Shadow Palette, use a matte brown shadow, like Nooner, as your transition color. Apply a shimmery brown, like Liar, to the lid with a flat brush.

Step 3: Blend a dark brown shimmer, like Dark Side, with Tom Ford Cognac Sable onto the crease and down to the bottom lash line, creating a C-shape.
