A year might have gone by since we lost Joan Rivers, but she will never fade from our memories.

Daughter Melissa Rivers opened up about the one-year anniversary of her mother's death and told E! News at its New York Fashion Week kick-off party that she honored her mother in a very low-key way at home. "I did exactly what I thought I was going to do," she said.

"I lit a candle with my son and said a little prayer and had a little reflective moment."

Afterwards, Melissa and son Cooper went their separate ways for the rest of the evening. "He went off with his friends, and I stayed home and had some friends over," she explained. "We opened a good bottle of wine!"

But that wasn't the original plan. The Fashion Police host wanted her son to hang out with her that night, but someone came to her and said that she should let him go out and have some fun.

"I really did hear my mom's voice saying, 'Oh, Melissa, please. You're gonna make him stay home tonight? What are you doing?'" You can't say no to your mother, so Cooper did what any normal kid would do on a Friday night.

Sept. 4 marked the one-year anniversary of the late E! star's death, and that day Melissa posted a touching tribute on her mother's Twitter page. "Today marks one year since my mother passed. This was the year of firsts: first holidays, first birthdays, first everythings without mom, without grandma.

"While it's been difficult," she continued, "I've been amazed by the outpouring of love and overwhelming kindness we've received from family, friends, and people whose lives were touched by the woman they knew as Joan -- a woman we all miss so very much."

The comic legend died at the age of 81 after being taken off life support following complications from a throat operation in New York City on Aug. 28.
