Jonah Hill has a very simple reason why he recently tweeted his opposition to Russia's anti-gay laws.

"I have tons of gay friends, gay family members," the 21 Jump Street star told me at the Governors Awards, adding, "It's like saying, why do you think people should breathe?"

Hill posted a photo of himself earlier this month wearing the Human Rights Campaign's $28 T-shirt that features the phrase "Love Conquers Hate" in Russian.

"Help us show Russia & the world that #LoveConquersHate," he wrote. "Visit http://loveconquershate.org and @HRC to see how you can help."

"I support anybody doing whatever they want to do to be who they are," Hill explained to us.

Hill critics, be warned—the actor isn't reading any of the hate tweets you may have sent him. "I don't check that," he said. "I don't go on Twitter to look at myself or the Internet to look at myself."

HRC's launched the Love Conquers Hate campaign to urge the International Olympic Committee to condemn Russia's anti-gay laws. Other stars who've donned the "Love Conquers Hate" shirt include Madonna, Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Bacon, Wentworth Miller, Fergie, Kelly Osbourne, Tim Gunn, Andy Cohen, Andrew Rannells, Ricky Martin and Jason Collins.

"Love conquers Hate!" Madonna captioned an Instagram shot of herself wearing the T-shirt. "@HumanRightsCampaign. Russia and the Olympics need to get there act together for the Sochi 2014...... Discrimination will not be tolerated!"
