It's been 10 years since the last two of the three Matrix movies was released. And it will probably be a very long time before—if ever!—we see a fourth.
"I don't believe there will be one," the trilogy's star Keanu Reeves told me earlier this week while promoting his directorial debut Man of Tai Chi (in theaters today). "I don't know what the Wachowskis are doing right now other than working on Jupiter. I don't know if they're thinking about another Matrix."
Reeves can't imagine Neo being resurrected. "I thought the way Thomas Anderson/Neo went our was pretty spectacular," he said. (However, Reeve would love to see a Bill & Ted comeback!)
Man of Tai Chi revolves around a young man (played by Matrix stuntman Tiger Hu Chen) who is lured into a deadly underground martial arts fight club ruled by a mysterious tycoon named Donaka Mark (Reeves).
Despite Reeves' impressive fighting chops in the flick, he admits he's far from being the real deal. "I'm good at movie Kung fu," he said with a laugh. "I'm a black belt in movie Kung fu. I studied martial arts very briefly when I was a young kid. I was like 10 or 11."
Reeves always planned to costar in the movie. Going behind the camera came later. "Originally I wasn't going to direct it but as the writer Michael Cooney and the executive producer Daxing Zhang and I were working on the story, it became such a vision in my mind and my heart that I wanted to direct it."
He added with a laugh, "I was already playing Donaka Mark and the director said I was perfect for the part."
