Versace Calls Out Gina Gershon's House of Versace Film as "Work of Fiction

Italian fashion house reveals it did not authorize the book on which the Lifetime movie is based

They imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

And while Donatella Versace may have found Maya Rudolph's impersonation of her on Saturday Night Live "hilarious," she isn't laughing when it comes to Gina Gershon's portrayal of her in Lifetime's upcoming original movie House of Versace.

Of course, the former SNL star never drew attention to the fashion guru's cocaine addiction, as Gershon does.

"Versace has neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming TV movie about Mrs. Versace," the Italian fashion house told Women's Wear Daily when asked to comment on the film.

Based on Wall Street Journal reporter Deborah Ball's book House of Versace: The Untold Story of Genius, Murder, and Survival, the Lifetime flick covers such touchy subjects as Donatella nearly bankrupting the label, her drug use and her brother's murder.

But according to the brand, viewers shouldn't consider the film an accurate depiction of the fashion empire.

"Since Versace did not authorize the book on which it is based, the movie should only be seen as a work of fiction," the company went on to say.

For those looking to separate fact from fiction, Lifetime will also air an hour-long documentary called Versace: Beyond the Headlines following the premiere of House of Versace on Oct. 5 at 8 p.m.
