Fans of Eva Mendes' retro-cool sense of style are undoubtedly going gaga over her recently launched New York & Company collection, which the Cuban-American beauty tells The Edit was "directly inspired by [her] closet."

And for those wondering how Mendes might style the collection—or any other outfit, for that matter—the 39-year-old also opened up to the magazine about a few of her rules when getting ready for the red carpet.

"If you go short, no cleavage or anything super-fitted; if you're covered from head to toe, you can go as fitted as you like," says Mendes, who is a fan of vintage silhouettes, including feminine fit-and-flare skirts.

As it turns out, a good deal of those skirts probably are vintage, as the star continues to thrift shop despite the fact that she has access to high-end designer gear.

"I think it comes back to not having the means to buy what you wanted," she reveals of her Goodwill shopping habit. "I've never grown out of being that girl."

How refreshing is that?

While she was willing to dish about her style secrets, there's one topic the fashionista would rather keep buried in the closet, along with her fabulous vintage finds: boyfriend Ryan Gosling.

"I'm sorry. I'm shutting down," Mendes said when asked about her relationship with the 32-year-old actor.

"I'm such a weirdo. I literally lose my ability to speak—and you were doing so well," she told the reporter.
