John Mayer Talks Katy Perry Duet: "I Tried to Be Alone, But I Can't"

Singer also said that his girlfriend's singer "Roar" is a "huge song"

John Mayer opened up about his ladylove Katy Perry and their duet "Who You Love" in an interview with Billboard magazine.

The crooner admitted that the track is all about accepting the person you're with and realizing that you can't hide from love.

"I started singing 'And my girl, she ain't the one I saw coming/ Sometimes I don't know which way to go/ And I tried to run before, but I'm not running anymore.' In 2013, modern-day times that's sweet," he explained.

"Because there's so many other things to occupy your time that you can do for yourself. That to say, I tried to be alone and I can't. This is sort of our generation."

Mayer also confessed that the general idea behind the song can be best described as, "I love you based on the fact that I've tried to run and I'm not running and I give up."

He added that his girlfriend wrote the lyrics to her part of the song herself and said that "it was a really fun opportunity for her to write like, her answer to that."

Perry's verse expressed her own hesitations on the reluctantly romantic song, saying, "my boy was not the one that I saw coming, some have said his heart's too hard to hold."

But according to Mayer, making sure that the couple's different perspectives were addressed through the lyrics was crucial.

"You get these two sides of the relationship that are brutally honest but no less universal."

Mayer and Perry briefly split (for the second time) in March of this year and have been romantically linked since last summer.

During their most recent break, Mayer told Ellen DeGeneres that "coupling is a tricky thing."
