Simpson is set to star in a new NBC sitcom that's inspired by her life, the network announced today. Fashion Star producer Electus and Universal Television are coproducing it, with Nick Bakay, Ben Silverman and Joe Simpson signing on as executive producers. Bakay, whose credits include include'Til Death, Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Zookeeper, will pen the pilot script.
"I am so excited to work with with Ben and NBC again, this time on a scripted comedy," Simpson says in a statement. "I often find myself thinking that no one could ever make up the things that actually happen in my life—so between the real life elements and a great team of writers, I think we'll have people laughing!"
Added Ben Silverman, founder and chairman of Electus: "We are thrilled to team up with the multi-talented Jessica Simpson to bring this new sitcom to life on NBC as she is truly a modern-day Lucy with incredible comedic chops. From running a fashion empire to wrangling her public image as a new mom, we see Jessica's character approach a variety of 'everyday' circumstances that will get audiences laughing out loud."
This will not be the first time the singer/reality star will attempt to break into scripted comedy. In 2004, Simpson was set to star in an ABC comedy about a former singer-actress who had become a news anchor. The pilot was ordered by the network but failed to make it to series.
