If Sarah Jessica Parker wanted to make sure her guest of honor brought his wife along, she sure did a good job with the guest list.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama made a rare joint appearance at the intimate, $40,000-per-plate fundraiser hosted tonight by the Sex and the City star at the New York City home she shares with husband Matthew Broderick.

"You're the tie-breaker," Obama told the 50 guests in attendance. "You're the ultimate arbiter of which direction this country goes."

Not to mention of whether plaids or stripes are in this fall!

Among those in attendance were Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, who enlisted the first lady as a cover girl in 2008; Wintour's The Devil Wears Prada doppelgänger, Meryl Streep; Michael Kors and Bravo exec and host Andy Cohen.

We'd call that a fashionable crowd. (Broderick, who's starring on Broadway in Nice Work if You Can Get It, missed the event because he had a performance.)

Obama called Parker "a great friend" and he appreciated it when her son, James Wilkie, started applauding when her mentioned during his stump speech that General Motors is "back on top."

"He wanted to fire up the crowd," the president cracked.

That would have been a night well spent for anyone, but after dining with SJP and party, the Obamas were off to another dinner for 250 people that reportedly netted the president's reelection campaign $2.5 million and featured a performance by Mariah Carey.
