For Kris Allen, an impromptu show promptly became no show at all.

On Sunday, the American Idol champ tweeted to his fans, "Who wants to go the beach and watch some guy play some tunes? Hear he's ok."

A little later, he added the following info: "How bout the pier in Santa Monica? 8 pm. You...me...couple tunes...ocean breeze...birds pooping on us. It's gonna be great."

Well, it started off great, at least.

Surrounded by an ever-growing crowd, Allen managed to get through a few covers and some original tunes before a pier police officer showed up and immediately shut the mini-concert down because the singer was performing without a permit. (Check out the above clip!)

While no arrests were made, fans nevertheless expressed their frustration by way of the hashtag, #FreeKrissAllen, which quickly became a trending topic on Twitter.

"I wasn't expecting anything from tonight but that's not what I expected. Getting stopped by the cops never crossed my mind," Allen later tweeted. "Thanks to everyone that came out. Had a good time. And to the people that just stopped...thanks for stopping. Btw I didn't mean any disrespect to other street performers out there. I respect them so much for what they do."

Meanwhile, Santa Monice Police tells E! News exactly what went down.

"Other performers on the pier were upset because Allen did not have a permit and was performing in an area where event permit-holding performers cannot perform," said a police spokesperson. "A Harbor Guard was told about the performance going on by one of the regular pier performers, and he addressed Allen. Allen was polite and stopped his performance."

Allen's new album, Thank You Camellia, is due out May 22.
