But hey, eventually one of these A-list names is going to stick, and if the latest round of breathless reports are to be believed, then the caustic Brit has found his new panelmate in Rihanna.
Though everyone from Fergie to Britney Spears to Janet Jackson to LeAnn Rimes has been rumored at some point to be pulling up a chair next to Cowell and L.A. Reid, reports pegging RiRi as the chosen one reached a fever pitch this week.
It would be quite the coup if Simon somehow pulled it off, but did he manage it? Is Rihanna really in talks to be the new X Factor judge? Cue the Hallelujah chorus, because this rumor is...
So false!
Not only has Rihanna not entered into any talks to join the show, but any such discussions would likely be fruitless endeavors.
"Simon knows how busy Rihanna is and this is a big commitment for a long period of time," a source close to the show told E! News. "This is very unlikely."
Bad news for fans who wanted a weekly dose of Rihanna on their small screens. Good news for all those other pop tarts who are still holding out hope of landing the cushy gig.
