Anne Hathaway sure knows how to pick 'em.

Her last boyfriend is cooling his heels in prison. Her current boyfriend might have just averted a similar fate.

Hathaway squeeze Adam Shulman was snapped by paparazzi Saturday swiping a mural from a Manhattan construction site.

But once photos surfaced of the art-jacking, Shulman decided to do right, returning the art to its rightful owner yesterday.

"He called up and was very apologetic," says Ken Hart, president of H&H Builders. "I guess they didn't realize it was not for the taking. He was in California, but he sent some guys to bring it back."

Hart says Shulman and a friend saw the mural, painted by famous street artist Mr. Brainwash, tacked up to a building site at Ninth Avenue near Little West 12th Street, and must have assumed it was free for the taking. The large multicolored mural shows a man wearing black sunglasses holding a sign reading "Happy Mother's Day."

Hart originally told reporters he intended to press charges if the painting was not returned.

Shulman's rep did not return calls for comment.

Shulman, 29, replaced Raffaello Follieri as Hathaway's main man, after Follieri was busted for his role in the so-called Vati-con investment scheme. He's now serving a four-and-a-half-year sentence.
