Save Your New Fave!

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip Scott Garfield/NBC

You love Studio 60. I love Six Degrees. It seems pretty much everyone loves The Nine. And yet, somehow, when the Nielsens ratings come out each week, we are faced with a harsh reality: We might be the only people in America actually watching shows.

Such is the case with at least a handful of brand-spanking-new TV series this season which are freakishly good—and freakishly under watched. And, I hate to say it...but  that obviously also means they are in danger of cancellation.

If you were a fan of CBS’ Smith (the first series to get the ax this fall) or NBC’s Kidnapped (which also will be cut off after 13 episodes), you know all too well that in the current TV climate, you gotta show big ratings right out of the gate—or show yourself the door. It makes it a truly nerve-wracking time of year, because any minute now (cue the freaky music) another great new show we just fell in love with could bite the dust.

Gulp.

That said, I’m rallying the tube-loving troops by launching a new fan campaign right here in WWK central: Save Your New Fave. This is your chance to weigh in on the one new fall show that deserves to be saved from impending cancellation—by letting your collective voice be heard by the decision makers.

As you may remember from our annual Save One Show campaign—which has rescued five out of six endangered veteran shows over the years—these fan rallies really can help a show.

To vote for Save Your New Fave, all you need to do is the following:

1. Look over the list below, which reveals the current status of the endangered new series. (The list continues on page two of this column.)

2. Pick the one show you cannot live without. (Only one, please!)

3. Vote for your show by posting a comment at the bottom of this story -- your comment should begin with the name of your chosen show, please. (To post a comment, simply "Log In" above and then click "Add Your Comments" below. It's easier than I'm making it sound!)

4. Keep watching that show, and tell all your friends to come vote for this poll! (Only one vote per username and computer will be counted.)

Next week, I will reveal the Save Your New Fave results to all you WWK readers—and more importantly—to the powers that be at the winning series’ network.

ENDANGERED NEW SERIES

STILL NOT SAFE

Friday Night Lights (NBC): With an audience of 6.3 million, this critical fave is getting half the viewers it needs—and deserves.

Justice (Fox): Fox just ordered three more episodes and moved Justice to Mondays (starting Oct. 23). It’s a show of faith—but not a whole lot of it.

Men in Trees (ABC): With a smidge more than half the viewers of CBS’ Close to Home (6.9 million versus 11.15), the smartly written Trees is far from winning its time slot.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (NBC): It’s been losing viewers every week but seems to have leveled out somewhat (and the big names attached certainly help its cause).

LIKELY DOOMED

The Nine (ABC): With 8.4 million viewers in its most recent airing last week, The Nine slipped 2 million viewers from its premiere and sank further down in its second half hour…all this despite being the “best new show” according to some critics.

Six Degrees (ABC): The bad news is the ratings are slipping week to week (down 34 percent from the Sept. 21 premiere). The really bad news is that Six keeps losing viewers in the second half hour of each episode (2.1 million tuned out half way through last week).

Standoff (Fox): The network ordered three more scripts, but if ratings don’t improve, it’ll have to stand down.

'Til Death (Fox): Currently on hiatus (and in need of better scripts to keep viewers around).

Twenty Good Years (NBC): Our beloved George Bluth (Jeffrey Tambor) lost a million viewers from the lead-in audience of 30 Rock.

Vanished (Fox): With hunky leading man Gale Harold out (why, God, why?) and the series moving to Friday, all signs are pointing toward impending doom.

GOOD AS GONE

Happy Hour (Fox): On hiatus and unlikely to return.

Now, send in your vote by adding your comment below (remember, you first have to "sign in" above).  You have the power to sway the masses!

[Update: By the way, if you're wondering why this story keeps moving up on the main page, it's because we want to make sure people see this campaign and vote. Sorry for any confusion.]
