Rich Sommer, aka Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce's head of TV advertising on Mad Men (and close friend of E!'s The Soup), panicked fans today by tweeting that the show might not return for a fifth season.
What?!
Could this be a case of false advertising?
Here's Rich's original five-alarm tweet:
"I have no idea if there will be a season 5 of MM. I am operating under the assumption that there won't be, until I hear otherwise."
Since most fans are operating under the assumption that there will be a fifth season of the hit AMC series, it's understandable that the tweet sent alarm bells ringing in the Twitterverse.
The actor responded quickly with some Don Draper damage control, publishing a "major clarification":
"I am aware that all parties involved are currently negotiating the next season of Mad Men and beyond. Nothing official has been stated yet as far as a pickup, although it is a safe bet—very safe bet—that the show will return in its usual fashion.
"That being said, as an actor who used to be unemployed a lot, and as a father of two, I choose to operate under certain pretenses, until I hear otherwise. Meaning: until I get my official pickup, I am squirreling away money and seeing a shrink to help me cope with being in this business. I will return to calm when we get the official word."
In these uncertain times, who can't relate to Rich's whiskey-glass half-empty pessimism? Still, we're hoping for the best because honestly, what's a world without Mad Men?
