Tonight's episode of Heroes was all about the daddy derby. Two different "orphans," Sylar and Claire, both reconnected with their birth fathers with very different outcomes. Can you already guess which one was saved and which one was left bereft...again?

Let's discuss the various dads, be they good, bad or morally Gray...

WHAT WE LEARNED

Daddy No. 1: Tonight's closing image was one of the sharpest in a while. Love the idea of Nathan spiriting his bio-daughter, Claire, out of her house just as the Hunter's unleashed dogs came nosing after her. Nonsensical though it might be that they would simply hover outside the window instead of fleeing properly, the general sentiment and intention was excellent.

Daddy No. 2: Poor Sylar. Sylar doesn't even get a suave evil progenitor, someone with little savoir faire like Charles Carmichael (Chuck's cool alter ego on Chuck) or even Arthur Petrelli. Nope, Sylar gets stuck with a raggedy hobo guy. Now, no fooling, Lionel Luthor John Glover is a badass, but Sylar's disappointment was palpable. Does anyone else think he was imagining that his true father would be a worthy adversary and that he was disappointed by the outcome of their fight?

Daddy No. 3: Hey! Matt Parkman's kid is named Matt Parkman! Hiro and Ando returned this week with marching orders to rescue Matt Jr. Can't wait to see what mojo ended up embedded in the kiddo. After all, as Angela Petrelli (goddess among women) pointed out to the Hunter, "Genetics is a very complicated subject."

Rebel Swell: Rebel remains an unknown quantity but (s)he is currently this show's coolest character. Yes, even HRG and Sylar are going to have to take a backseat to Rebel. But here's the question: Can the eventual reveal of Rebel's in-person persona match up to the gradual and gratifying unveiling of Zachary Quinto as Sylar after the long buildup toward meeting that character in season one? That's the test. Let's see if Heroes passes...

Comic Book Girl: Love love love Claire as the world's hottest comic-book-store clerk. And her boss handing her "homework" so she can learn the books? Love the visual and love the inherent humor. Here's hoping this remains a part of the series...

WHAT'S TO COME

  • One character is marked for death and we're going to see the beginning of his or her downward spiral starting with the next ep.
  • Rebel's identity is revealed. (Holler!)
  • The cast continues to be extremely adorable and lovable as you can see in this photo posted by Greg Grunberg.

What did you think of "Shades of Gray"? Was it as Sylariffic as you'd hoped? Post in the comments
