Oprah Winfrey on Precious: Don't Expect to "Enjoy" It
Director Lee Daniels insists he never thought that his new movie, Precious, would have much success.
In fact, he never even thought it would be released in theaters.
"I thought it was going to go straight to DVD," Daniels told me last night at Precious' AFI Fest 2009 presented by Audi premiere in Hollywood. "I mean, who was going to want to see a movie about an obese black girl learning how to read?"
But then he got a call from Oprah Winfrey…
Update
Stars Tweet Out, Fans Shell Out for This Is It
UPDATE: This Is It earned an estimated $2.2 million from last night's North American screenings. Sony calls the results "unprecedented" for a Tuesday in October, and early estimates for Wednesday and Thursday are looking equally as jaw-dropping.
________
She may be 77 years old, but Elizabeth Taylor is nothing if not a trendsetter.
Michael Jackson's close friend was the first to twitter her review of the star's final performance, This Is It, in 19 rounds of 140 characters or less, but, after last night's premiere, she certainly wasn't the last.
And she wasn't the only idol loving the film, either.
"I'm sitting in the Nokia Theater in awe of the This Is It movie!," wrote Paula Abdul. "So many emotions are coming up for me I can't believe He's Gone BRILLIANT."
"Mj movie is powerful," Ryan Seacrest said. "The singing..the dancing!! He was a perfectionist…and very funny."
Dancing With the Stars hottie Julianne Hough felt the message as well.
"MJ movie was amazing so inspiring and motivating!!! Let's make this world a better place," she encouraged.
Like Liz, one viewer thought the film was ripe for awards, while several Glee-ful stars gave their takes…
The View's Sherri Shepherd Learns Wax Is Wack!
For somebody who isn't sure the world is round, The View's Sherri Shepherd proves to be an adventurous traveler in the realm of the senses, visiting Brazil (kinda sorta) on Friday's show. Check her out getting her down-there all done up with a bikini wax, which she says hurts "worse than having a baby." Can we get an ouch from the congregation? It hurts just to watch!
Rise 'n' Shine: No Adoption for Jennifer Aniston Today
• Star magazine claims Jennifer Aniston is going to adopt, but Us Weekly says no sir-ee bob. Someday, she actually will be preparing for motherhood and we won't believe it, so the wolf will eat all the sheep.
• It's a biopic bonanza this morning! Evan Rachel Wood wants Dakota Fanning to play her in the movie of her life, while Catherine Zeta-Jones supposedly wants to take the lead on a Susan Boyle film.
• You might have thought action directors McG and Michael Bay used their massive explosions to compensate for something, but apparently not.
• Seriously, messing with Sherri Shepherd is a bad idea. The Wrestler 2, anyone?
• File this under "incredibly useful information": Rachel McAdams wears bamboo underpants.
• Dear Aubrey O'Day: Thank you for not doing a season of A Shot at Love. It could have ruined that really stellar career of yours. Love, Rise 'n' Shine
Oh look! There's Jen again in the Big Picture gallery!
Burning Q's: Sherri's Oversharing & TV Judge Creds
I read that Sherri Shepherd, who once wondered out loud if the world was flat, has had a ton of abortions. Why do stars share all this? TMI!
—Micki, New Jersey
Shepherd was spilling to a Christian women's magazine. You can't appear in one of those without sharing your life-affirming account of Jesus lifting you from the ashes. Shepherd's involved abusive relationships and, she says, "more abortions than I would like to count."
And, oh: The revelation certainly hasn't hurt the woman's profile, has it?
"Of all the people on The View, nobody pays attention to her," notes celebrity therapist Gilda Carle. "We know that Whoopi and Joy are outspoken, and we know all about crying Elizabeth. But now Sherri wants people to pay attention to her."
Now you pay attention to me, as I answer more of your Burning Q's!
