Stander sure wasn't your standard cop. Based on a true story, Thomas Jane stars as a white South African police captain who challenges the injustices of apartheid. Stander sticks it to the Man by sticking up banks, while still working for the department. After achieving folk-hero status, he finally gets caught and tossed in the slammer, but the brazen jailbird breaks out and continues his spree.
What a trouper! Director Bronwen Hughes keeps the energy level high with frenetic camerawork and snappy editing, but despite the ensuing Bonnie-and-Clyde antics, the flick never matches the power of its opening few minutes. Jane is charming and charismatic as the fancy flatfoot, but the script favors heists and shoot-outs over character insight and motivation. You won't feel robbed, but you won't feel totally rewarded, either.
