Though it has been excluded from Oscar consideration, this Palestinian film should not be ignored by film fans. Directed, written by and starring Elia Suleiman, this is an affecting, expressive, blackly funny movie about Palestinians living in Nazareth, the city with the largest Arab population in Israel. Focusing on two lovers living on opposite sides of an Israeli military checkpoint, the film uses, of all things, humor to spotlight the characters' frustrations.
These play out in hilariously strange fantasy sequences involving staring contests, little red balloons and a target practice that turns into a choreographed dance number. Equally absurd and despairingly angry, the result is simply
Divine.
