Exclusive! Eva Mendes' Naked Truth
Don Flood for PETA
Eva Mendes is getting naked tomorrow on the streets of Los Angeles.
Sorta.
“It’s very tasteful,” Mendes just told me. “It’s all in fun. It’s got a flirtatious, fun spirit about it. It’s not like come hither or anything like that.”
The 33-year-old starlet is talking about her new “Fur? I’d Rather Go Naked” campaign for animal rights group PETA. She'll unveil the poster tomorrow afternoon on celebrity-filled Robertson Boulevard, just down the street from the Ivy restaurant. (She had planned to kick off the campaign earlier this month in New York City, but had to postpone due to illness.)
Mendes said she dropped fur from her wardrobe after hitting the red carpet in chilly New York City for the premiere her 2003 flick, Stuck on You. When the native Los Angeleno realized she hadn’t packed warm clothes for the trip, she decided to borrow a coat from a fashion house. A fur coat.
PETA immediately fired off a letter. “I was so floored by what they said that I said, ‘I promise I will never do it again,’ ” Mendes remembered.
Fast-forward to about six months ago. Mendes and her boyfriend, Peruvian filmmaker George Augusto, got Hugo, a 70-pound Belgian Malinois guard dog. “I got him for safety reasons for my house,” she said. “It’s like we got this fierce dog who is going be manning the house but cut to: He’s in bed with us and cuddling. I really just started to think, ‘Oh my god, I would never wear Hugo.’ ”
Sure, but doesn’t Mendes feel a wee bit funny knowing her bare buttocks are going to be plastered on billboards and such? “I’m not going to lie,” she said. “It will probably be weird when I see it. It’s going to be like, ‘Oh, wow, there it is.’ ”
But the ends justifies the means. "I'm not trying change people's minds or tell them what I think is right," Mendes said. "I just want people to think about it, question it. It's about awareness."
