Heavenly Debut for "Charlie's Angels"
The troika of Drew Barrymoore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu as the femme private eyes decorating Sony's flashy big screen version of the popular '70s TV series proved irresistible to audiences eager for some fresh, hot action.
The beautiful, butt-kicking threesome easily became the nation's new number-one movie force, pulling in an average $13,336 at 3,037 theaters. The debut of this lavish caper--the second best bow ever outside the summer blockbuster season--bumped Universal's domestic farce Meet the Parents down to second place after four weeks in the top slot.
But Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller's yukfest earned another $13.1 million, besting the $12 million scored by Will Smith and Matt Damon's mawkish golf fantasy, The Legend of Bagger Vance. The Robert Redford-directed, DreamWorks-distributed drama was the victim of rough reviews and teed off poorly (we promise no more golf puns) in third place.
With a per screen average of $5,822 at 2,061 theaters, and stiff holiday competition on the way, it's unlikely Bagger Vance will drive (oops) big box office over the next few weeks. On the flip side, Universal's Meet the Parents, which averaged $4,903 at 2,672 theaters for the weekend, continues to have legs and has now grossed a whopping $116.9 million.
No other new movies ranked in the top 10, but in fourth place Denzel Washington's football flick Remember the Titans earned another $7 million to run its total gross closer to the coveted $100 million. After six weeks, the Disney movie has racked up $96.8 million.
Fading fast was Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2. In its second week the Artisan horror sequel dropped a scary 60 percent, earning just $5.3 million in fifth place.
Box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations estimated the top 10 flicks as follows (final tallies will be released Monday):
1. Charlie's Angels, $40.5 million
2. Meet the Parents, $13.1 million
3. The Legend of Bagger Vance, $12 million
4. Remember the Titans, $7 million
5. Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, $5.3 million
6. Bedazzled, $4.7 million
7. Pay It Forward, $4.4 million
8. The Little Vampire, $3.6 million
9. Lucky Numbers, $2.2 million
10. The Legend of Drunken Master, $1.6 million
