Fran Drescher's Fight to Save Gay Marriage

Fran Drescher doesn't only support gay marriage, she's doing something about it.

No, she's not getting married to a woman!

The former Nanny star is cohosting a cocktail party tomorrow night with her ex-husband, Peter Marc Jacobson, which benefits Equality California's fight to defeat Proposition 8, the November ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in California.

"I don't know if you realize this, but I'm a gay icon," Drescher joked with me earlier today. "But even if I weren't, I'm a political activist who believes in preserving the American dream which is tolerance of diversity and the separation of church and state…It's simply un-American not to be tolerant of different lifestyles. If you wanna live in a single-minded, religious-based country you're in the wrong place."

The fundraiser, which takes places at Jacobson's L.A.-area home, is expected to be a sell-out crowd of about 100 supporters shelling out at least $100 per person.

Teaming up with her ex to help support Equality California's "No on 8" campaign was a no-brainer for Drescher: "We're really good friends, and we're writing partners, and we have very similar beliefs in terms of ideology as well as theology."

Jacobson added, "It's not about being gay or straight…If two people are in love and they want to be married, they should have the right to do this."
