George Takei is beaming.

The Star Trek icon heard today's good news about gay marriage while in Las Vegas for a Trekkie convention.

"We're overjoyed," he said. "We're very happy."

The "we" is Takei and his partner of more than 20 years, Brad Altman. The two tied the knot on September 14, 2008, making them one of about 18,000 couples who married in California before the ban was voted into place.

Takei knows the fight for equality is not over.

"I'm sure this is going to be challenged all the way up to the Supreme Court, but my gut feeling is that it's a clear Constitutional issue that's in our favor," he said, adding, "The people that advocated Proposition 8 used distortion and misinformation in their campaign and outright—have to use a polite word here—prevarication. That's not the way a democracy runs."

His message to Prop 8 supporters? "Mind your own marriage," he said.

Takei and Altman will celebrate today's big win in Vegas with some family: "And we're going to pop a bottle of champagne."

Cheers to that!
