Charlie Sheen no longer has legal custody of daughters Sam and Lola.

A well-placed source confirms that Sheen agreed about a month ago to give up the joint custody he shared with ex-wife Denise Richards.

Why the sudden change?

The source says Richards asked for full custody of Sam, 6, and Lola, 4, because of the mess Sheen is currently going through with his wife, Brooke Mueller. "She was just too nervous leaving the kids with Charlie or letting them go to his house," the source said.

The actor apparently didn't fight Richards on this one. "She told him if he did, she was going to have to take him to court," the source said.

Even so, Sheen does get to spend time with the girls. "Denise doesn't want to take Sam and Lola away from Charlie," the source said. "She just wants them to be safe. He usually goes for dinner at Denise's house to see them."

Sheen continues to pay $50,000 a month in child support to Richards, the source said.

Reps for Richards and Sheen did not comment.
