Kris Allen says there's no need to worry about Adam Lambert after his split from boyfriend Drake LaBry.

"He's doing good," the American Idol winner, 24, told us yesterday at the People's Choice Awards nominations announcement. "He's obviously not completely happy about it, but I think it was just something that needed to happen."

As for any competition brewing between Allen and Lambert...

Allen says he and his runner-up remain tight. "We see each other every once in awhile and we text all the time," Allen said.

Allen's self-titled album is due out Nov. 17; Lambert's For Your Entertainment follows just six days later.

Allen also said he's been taking some career cues from a couple of fellow American Idolers.

"David Cook has done his thing for a year and he's been very successful at it," he said. "Chris Daughtry is obviously very, very successful with what he's done. They've both stayed really grounded and really cool. I've talked to them a little bit."

Their biggest words of advice? "Sleep," Allen said with a laugh. "That's what they tell me—sleep when you can!"
