It's going to be awhile before John Travolta slips into a housecoat again.

Hairspray director Adam Shankman tells me the sequel to his 2007 musical box office hit is far from being a done deal...

"We are looking for a writer right now," he said. "There's no music written. It's just a bunch of ideas. No one's signed on to do it."

Hairspray, based on the Broadway adaptation of John Waters' cult classic film of the same name, starred a crossdressing Travolta as Edna Turnblad, then-newcomer Nikki Blonsky as her daughter Tracy and Zac Efron as singing sexpot Link Larkin.

Not that Shankman's sitting around waiting for Hairspray to happen. Among his gazillion or so projects is directing Carrie Underwood's Christmas television special for Fox.

Dolly Parton is one of the many celebs appearing on the show.

"I can't wait to get her on set," Shankman said of the country music legend. "I'm so excited."

And so are we.
