Candis Cayne to Cher: "Show Love And Support"

The transgender actress offers up some advice as Chastity Bono transitions from a woman to a man

Candis Cayne knows a thing or two about changing genders.

You may remember Cayne: She's the transgender actress who played William Baldwin's mistress on Dirty Sexy Money.

"It's such a private thing," Cayne told me shortly after learning that Cher's daughter, Chastity Bono, was transitioning from a woman to a man. "It's a huge decision. It's not like you wake up one day and say, 'Oh, I'm  going to change my sex—won't that be fun?'"

Cayne may not know Bono or Cher, but she does have some words of advice…

"The way Cher reacts to him is going to be the most important part of his transition," she said. "No matter how you feel, you need to show love and support to him…It is the most important relationship."

Cayne transitioned in her early 20s.

"I would tell Chaz to follow his path," she said. "It's really, really scary but when you start and it catches hold you really realize you're doing the right thing."

As for transitioning under the Hollywood spotlight, Cayne can't even imagine what that will be like. "I know a lot of people who transitioned and dropped out of society for two years. They don't talk to anybody. They become hermits. They try to do everything alone," she said. "Chaz has to try to center himself around people who show complete love and support."
